Bring Your Own Keys (BYOK)

Unlimited Summaries on Your Own AI Account

Bring Your Own Keys (BYOK) lets you connect your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini API key so that summaries are generated on your AI account instead of ours. The biggest benefit: when you use your own key, your monthly summary credit limit is removed entirely — you get unlimited summariesof videos and podcasts.

This article explains what BYOK unlocks, how to get an API key from each provider, and how to add, test, and manage your keys.

What BYOK unlocks

Adding your own key turns on several things at once:

  • Unlimited summaries. Your normal monthly credit limit no longer applies. Because the AI cost lands on your provider bill, you can summarize as many videos and podcast episodes as you like.

  • Your choice of AI provider and model. Use OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), or Google Gemini — and optionally pin a specific model (for example a faster, cheaper model or a more capable one).

  • Email Digest (when available on your plan). A scheduled email summarizing new content from the channels you follow, written on your own key.

  • Daily Podcast Summary (when available, OpenAI or Gemini keys only). A private podcast feed that turns new summaries into a short audio episode you can subscribe to in any podcast app.

BYOK is available on plans that include it. If you don't see the API Keys page described below, your current plan doesn't include BYOK yet.

Where to find the API Keys page

Before you start: get an API key

You'll need an API key from one of the supported providers. You only need one to get started, but you can add a key for each provider if you like.

ProviderWhere to create a key
OpenAIplatform.openai.com → API keys
Anthropic (Claude)console.anthropic.com → API Keys
Google Geminiaistudio.google.com → Get API key

A few things to know:

  • These keys are paid usage on your own provider account. You're billed by the provider for what you use — typically a fraction of a cent per summary on the default models.

  • Most providers require you to add a small amount of billing credit before the key will work.

  • Copy the key as soon as you create it. Providers usually show it only once.

Adding a key

  1. In your dashboard, open Integrations → API Keys.

  2. Click Add a key.

  3. Choose a Provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini).

  4. Paste your API key. It's stored encrypted and never shown back to you in full.

  5. (Optional) Pick a Model. Leave this blank to use the provider's recommended default.

  6. Click Save.

Add a key modal

Your first key is automatically set as the active key — the one used to generate your summaries.

Default models

If you don't pick a model, we use a fast, low-cost default for each provider:

ProviderDefault model
OpenAIGPT-4o mini
AnthropicClaude Haiku 4.5
Google GeminiGemini 2.5 Flash

You can change the model any time by editing the key. More capable models produce richer summaries but cost more per request on your provider bill.

Test your key

After saving, click Test on the key's row. We send a tiny request to the provider to confirm the key works.

  • Connection successful — the key is valid and a green check appears in the Validated column.

  • Connection failed — the message tells you what went wrong (for example, an invalid key or no billing credit on your account).

Testing a key

Tip: if a summary suddenly starts failing later on, run Test again — your provider key may have been revoked or run out of credit.

Choosing which key is active

You can save one key per provider (up to three total). Only one key is active at a time — that's the one used for your summaries.

To switch, click Use for summaries on the key you want to make active. The Active column shows which one is currently in use.

Editing or deleting a key

  • Edit — replace the key value and/or change the pinned model. After editing, the key shows as not-yet-validated, so run Test again.

  • Delete — remove the key entirely.

If you delete your only active key, summaries fall back to the standard plan behavior (and your normal credit limit applies again).

Switching keys and your past summaries

Different AI models produce different summaries of the same video, so each summary is tied to the specific provider and model that created it.

If you switch your active key (say, from Anthropic to Gemini) and then open a video you summarized earlier, you'll still see your previous summary — with a small note like "Showing a cached summary by Anthropic." On the video detail page you can click Re-run on my active key to regenerate it with your current provider and model.

You'll never see another customer's private summaries, and they'll never see yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is my key secure? Yes. Keys are encrypted at rest and are only used to talk to your chosen
provider when generating your content. We never display a saved key back to you.

Does BYOK really remove my summary limit? Yes. While you have an active key, your dashboard shows Unlimited credits and no monthly cap applies, because the AI cost is on your provider account.

Which provider should I choose?Any of them work well. Gemini and the "mini/haiku" tier models are the cheapest to run; the larger models (GPT-4o, Claude Opus, Gemini Pro) give more detailed
summaries at a higher per-request cost.

Do I need a key for the Email Digest or Daily Podcast Summary?Yes — both run on your own key. The Daily Podcast Summary's audio specifically requires an OpenAI or Gemini key (Anthropic doesn't offer text-to-speech).

What happens if my key stops working?New summaries on that key will fail until you fix or replace it. Re-test the key, add billing credit at your provider, or paste a fresh key via Edit.

Next steps

  • Add your first key under Integrations → API Keys and run Test.
